When you own a vehicle the most important thing is safety, when your car is safe, you protect your life, passengers life and the life of every other person around you. That is why you need a safety standards certificate issued by a certified mechanic to confirms that your vehicle met the minimum safety standards when you want to get a license plate.
At Shareway auto service we take safety very seriously, we know our responsibility is not limited to issuing a safety standard certificate, in fact every single repair or diagnostic will be done and confirm with our certified mechanic to protect you and your love one from any unwanted accident.
Safety Standard certificate
Shareway auto service is a licensed motor vehicle inspection station and registered DriveOn Safety inspection station, If you are buying or selling a car, in order to transfer the ownership, or get a plate, the vehicle must first pass an inspection at an inspection station, licensed by the Ministry of Transportation ( MTO ) to ensure the minimum safety standards and confirms that it’s safe to drive.
Please note from Jan 01, 2025 only station registered under DriveOn program can issue safety certificate and ministry only accept digital DriveOn certificate.
When do I need a Safety Certificate ?

Emissions tests not required for light-duty and passenger vehicles. Emissions tests only requires for heavy-duty diesel commercial motor vehicles.
Your vehicle does not need an emissions test if it is a:
- light-duty or passenger vehicle (motor vehicles with a registered gross weight less than or equal to 4,500 kilograms), including motorcycles and motorhomes
- heavy non-diesel vehicle (vehicles with a registered gross weight over 4,500 kilograms that does not run on diesel)”
Ontario DriveOn program is safety and emission inspections program replacing MVIS (Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations) and emissions testing programs. All safety and emission certificate will be issue using DriveOn digital platform.
A safety standards certificate is valid for only 36 calendar days after the inspection, if you do not register your vehicle before it expires, you have to pay for a new inspection and certificate.
When you buy or sell a used car in order to register it you need a safety certificate.
You also need safety for:
- Registering a vehicle that was previously registered in another province or country.
- When change the status of a damaged vehicle from unfit to fit.
- When Register a rebuilt motor vehicle
- When it requires by your job description such as Uber or Lyft driver

The regular cost of safety check (under MVIS program) is $90.00 Canadian if the vehicle pass the safety test without requiring additional repair.

For light duty/passenger vehicle as of Jan 01, 2025, light-duty/passenger vehicle inspections can not be performed under the MVIS Program and all safety certificate must be under DriveOn program digital platform.
For heavy duty diesel commercial vehicle As of August 1, 2024, all commercial safety inspections, issuing stickers, will be performed in the DriveON program using the new DriveON equipment.” and “MVIS facilities will no longer be able to issue annual or semi-annual stickers under the MVIS Program.”
